About the Founder
Professor Surgeon Muhammad Kabir was born on 7th December 1935 in Peshawar. He belongs to a well-known family of the Awan tribe originated from Arab race. He had been associated with medical field for over 45 years.
He got his primary education from Abbottabad. His basic education was from D.I. Khan and Banuue. He went to Peshawar Islamia College for his Higher Secondary Education. He did his MBBS from Dow Medical College, University of Karachi in 1959. Following his house job, during which he decided to pursue General Surgery, he went to UK for post Graduate training and got his FRCS (General Surgery) from Royal College of Glasgow and Edinburgh UK in 1966.
The same year, on his return from the UK, he was appointed as the Assistant Professor of Surgery at Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. He was promoted to Professor of Surgery in 1971 at the age of 36 years. He then became the Head of Surgery and Orthopedics Department, a post which he occupied till 1995.
During his career Dr Kabir served on important posts such as the administrator of Khyber Teaching Hospital and Lady Reading Hospital. Moreover, he was the Secretary of Health of KPK from 1991 till 1992.
He started the Surgical Intensive Care Unit in Khyber Teaching Hospital and developed the Center for Laparoscopic Surgery. In addition, he has written 24 original articles and research papers. Furthermore, he designed four surgical instruments: Kabir’s Cholecystectomy Forceps’, Circumcision Forceps’, Kabir’s Kidney Incision and Kabir’s 2.5 cm Incision for open Cholecystectomy.
He retired in December 1995 and continued his attachment to the medical field by establishing Kabir Medical College, Sardar Begum Dental College and subsequently the Gandhara University despite great social and political pressure.
Dr Kabir was a practicing surgeon till the end of his life. He passed away at the age of 68 while on visit to London with his family after suffering a heart attack. May ALLAH bless his soul.
